METARmaps™ FAQ

UPGRADE PROGRAM

On Monday October 16, 2023, the FAA/AWS migrated their systems, so your map’s hard-coded processor now looks for data in a place which no longer exists.  When scoping requirements for METARmaps Version 4 OS, data migration was identified as a significant risk and maps built after 12/2021* are unaffected.

To solve this and future such issues, a next gen processor upgrade was created for your map which connects to our servers.  During this most recent change, servers were re-directed, and all connected maps began operating once AWS service was restored.

When ordering, please have the map’s Serial or Order # handy.

 Raspberry PI

RPi v1.1 (02/2018-07/2019*): This processor powered the original version of METARmaps.  Due to electronic incompatibility, these cannot be upgraded.  However, a new SD card can be created which will return your map to operational status. If you’d like to have your 2.4 GHz network name and password programmed, please provide these when ordering.  Order here

RPI v1.2 (08/2019-04/2021*): This processor will be replaced with the latest D1v2 processor. The replacement device is plug-compatible with your map. Please store your RPi & SD card in a safe place for future reference. Order here

D1v1

D1v1 (05/2021-12/2021*): Early D1s will be re-programmed.  Your D1 processor needs to be returned to us along with a page from the Upgrade Order Confirmation showing serial number and shipping address if different from billing address.  Order here

D1v2 (12/2021-Current): This version is unaffected by the recent changes.

What is a METAR map from METARmaps.com™?

METARmaps are functional aviation art which blend advanced computer technology with age-old printing methods to bring aviation sectionals to life.
Each METARmap starts with a portion of beautifully published Sectionals and adds a tiny computer, Wi-Fi and individually addressable LEDs to acquire and display FAA METAR weather data in near real-time.
Weather information is presented using the four standard FAA flight category colors: Green/VFR, Blue/MVFR, Red/IFR, Magenta/LIFR

How do METAR maps work?

Each METARmap has a tiny computer inside that controls the map’s LEDs and network interface. That computer connects via Wi-Fi and pulls weather data from our servers for each airport location on the map every 5 minutes. That information is used to update airport LEDs using the four standard FAA flight category colors: Green/VFR, Blue/MVFR, Red/IFR, and Magenta/LIFR.

What does my METAR map need in order to work?

All METARmaps need are 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Internet access and AC power. Easy setup instructions are found in the Owner’s Manual.

How long will it take to receive my METAR map?

All METARmaps are built to order, by us, right here in the USA. We take great care in the design process to ensure your METARmap functions properly, will easily connect to your Wi-Fi, and has the high quality finish and feel you expect. Every map and its associated components go through an extensive testing and burn-in process. The time it takes to create your map depends on the complexity of the map, the number of LEDs, and whether it is a custom order. Typically, turn time is 4-6 weeks, though subject to seasonal demands and prior sale volume.

What is Version 4?

Version 4 makes METARmaps the most powerful and versatile wall art ever.

METARmaps display: Flight Conditions (FAA / GARMIN colors), Winds, Gusts, Lightning, Civil Twilight (Sunrise/Sunset), Temperature and more.

Over-The-Air updates are automatically uploaded to your map to provide the latest improvements and features.

Settings are controlled using your cell phone or computer with no app required to be installed.

Briefly, how do I change the Wi-Fi network settings?

There is no problem at all making changes to your network settings.  The system looks for a network and if none is found, will revert to Access Point so you can use your mobile phone to make these and other changes. The connection procedure is fully detailed in the METARmaps Owner’s Manual.

What framing options are available?

We currently offer five framing options.

1) Black or Woodgrain MDF frames with glass for METARmaps - Minis.

2) 1” Brushed Aluminum profiled frame with non-glare, acrylic (plexi) glazing.

3) 1” Satin Black Aluminum profiled frame with non-glare, acrylic (plexi) glazing.

4) 2” Brushed Aluminum profiled frame with non-glare, acrylic (plexi) glazing.

5) 2” Satin Black Aluminum frame with non-glare, acrylic (plexi) glazing.

Do you accept custom orders?

Yes! If you don’t see your desired state or region in our selection of METARmaps, contact us and let us know. We’ll be pleased to design a custom map for you. We are always up front about pricing before you pay for your custom order. Only locations in the US are available at this time.

I don’t want to see a cord. Can this be hidden?

Power cords. This is what happened when Nikola Tesla didn’t get his way! The available Hidden Power option hides the cord by plugging into an owner-supplied recessed outlet behind the map. It looks like pure magic! Hidden Power includes a deep 2” metal frame (available in brushed aluminum or satin black), a medical-grade power supply and rigid, removable back. Though the purpose is to hide the 6’ cord, it can still be plugged into a standard wall outlet.

Can I run my METARmap from a battery?

There isn’t a specific battery option. That said, METARmaps have been powered using backup batteries (5V <100 Wh) at events.  This arrangement is good for a day or so.  For a longer duration, a 12 volt deep-cycle battery with a stepdown converter can be used, but I’m not sure this is a practical solution in a home setting.  Your mileage may vary.

What are the cost of options?

USE SHOP/ADD-ONS & UPGRADES to add options when ordering.

EXTRA AIRPORTS - beyond the single no-cost home airport, additional reporting points (subject to approval) are $25 each.

LOGOS - your company or organization logo can be added to just about any METARmap. We will work with you to get this exactly how you want it. There is a one-time setup and printing charge. $149

HIDDEN POWER - we all secretly desire this, but few are born with this ability. METARmaps, though have no such limitation. You must choose a 2” aluminum frame (Brushed Alum or Satin Black) when ordering.

PROCESSOR UPGRADES - See Upgrade Program above.

What is your shipping policy?
