Brownsville has seen some of the most pivotal moments in American history. The first battle of the Mexican-American War, a conflict that would shape the future of both nations, occurred here in 1846. In 1865, the last battle of the Civil War happened at Palmito Ranch, just east of Brownsville.
March 9, 1929 1:34 p.m. Charles Lindbergh lands in Brownsville to a crowd of 20,000 after a five hour, 38 minute historic flight from Mexico City establishing the first International Airmail service. This event opens the airport with Amelia Earhart in attendance. June 4: Pan American Airways leases airport, begins service with Ford Tri-Motors.
Fast forward to August 2014 and SpaceX opens its Star Base launch facility placing the area solidly into the bright, but noisy, future.
