Do you know the name of the first woman to fly around the world? Amelia? Well, no. It was an unassuming resident of Columbus, housewife, and mother of three named Geraldine (Jerrie) Mock. In 1962, Mock decided to follow her aviation passion (which began with a Ford Tri-motor ride as a girl, then as the only woman in the Aeronautical Engineering class at Ohio State University) with a trip around the world. On March 19, 1964 she left Columbus with less than 800 hours total time and a newly-minted instrument rating, in her trusty steed (a 1953 Cessna 180 named Spirit of Columbus) she navigated 23,206 miles in 29 days, 11 hours, 59 minutes to set a world record. She went on the acquire dozens of records and awards and remains Columbus’ most famous aviator.
