In 1911, a site for an airfield was chosen on Basque Flats, named for Spanish-French sheep herders who worked the fields in the then-desolate area of the Salt Lake Valley.
A good portion of the 1974 film Airport 1975, staring Charlton Heston, was filmed at SLC. For those too young to remember, the plot revolves around a mid-air collision with a Beechcraft Baron which crashes into the cockpit of the 747.
